The first step in the formal admission process is for a parent or guardian to phone the school office at 703-691-3040 and set up an initial interview with the High School Director (for grades 9-11 only), the Lower School Director (for grades 7-8) or the Elementary Coordinator (for grades 4-6). The student should be present at this interview, which typically runs for an hour. If you prefer to have an initial meeting without your child present, we will set up another time to meet the student.
After the interview, if you wish to apply for enrollment, you will need to submit the following application materials:
Once all application documents are submitted, our directors review the application carefully to determine whether your child is likely to be a good fit with The New School and to benefit from our program.* If we think your child would be a good fit, the main office will call or email you to arrange a classroom visit. Summer applicants may be asked to sit in on a summer class or camp session.
We will inform you of our admission decision as soon as possible. Once you return the enrollment form with a deposit, your child will be officially enrolled for the year in question.** Our application deadline for the coming school year is March 15. Applications received after that date will be considered as space permits. If space is not available we will add your child to the waiting list.
During the school year many parents and guardians attend one of our Sunday Open Houses before setting up an interview. We also offer Thursday drop-in sessions twice a month. The drop-in sessions are a good way to get an overview of the school, a brief tour of the campus and have a Q&A with our Assistant Head of School or Lower School Director. Students are welcome.
Thursday Drop-in Sessions, 9:15-10:15
Sessions every Thursday throughout the summer, and every other Thursday throughout the school year, beginning on September 8. Check our calendar for dates.
Sunday Open Houses, 2:00-4:00
October 2, October 23, January 8, January 22, March 5 and May 21
